Gym Fun

I know, I know, “gym” and “fun” don’t often go together very seamlessly. We normally go the gym to work, not for fun. Right? Right. I mean if you are having a good time you couldn’t possibly be working out. Right? Wrong. At least my very sore muscles say so. I promise to not go on another verbiage rant here. Yes, having goals is important. Moving with purpose is important. Jen was totally right about the benefits of having a trainer because they push you and encourage you and keep you on track. Work is good. Effort is good. All I’m saying is that sometimes… Read more

Reflecting on the Moment

The end of the year is a time to reflect on the past 12 months and think about the best and worst moments. For the past few years, I have made a list of my favorite moments from that year. Even though we are only a little over halfway through this year, I’m already finding myself thinking about the great moments that have happened already and wondering what might get edged out as the year goes on. Most of my moments have something to do with a trip I’ve taken. While I fully believe all your “moments” could happen right… Read more

Very Quick Limerick

There once were two girls from New York, Who went to Limerick from Cork. They found coffee and beer, Friendly people and cheer, And some yummies to eat with a fork. Greyhound-like Tour After visiting the English Market in Cork we hopped the bus on to Limerick. We had purchased fresh bread and cheese at the market, and so enjoyed a little picnic as we used the free bus wifi to search for what to see and do at our next stop. We arrived under grey skies and were greeted with more of a city-feel than I think either of us was expecting…. Read more

Personal Trainers- Are They Worth It?

I have been working out for almost fourteen years now, since the summer before I started college. It was more than not wanting to put on the “freshman fifteen” I wanted to lose the 40 pounds I had put on over the years on my smallish frame. I started on my own essentially, with the goal of being able to run a 5k- the shortest race distance that seemed fairly common. I slowly built up my mileage on the treadmill while also doing some sets on a few weight machines. The weight lifting seemed very secondary to me as I… Read more

Athletic Event Travel

It might seem like a shame to think that I visited Paris and never made it into Notre Dame. I was a little too muddy at the time. I did go to Munich during Octoberfest… but it wasn’t to have a beer under one of the big tents. I was in Dublin for St. Patrick’s Day weekend but left early on the 17th — before the parade and most of the festivities. I’ve made trips to Seattle, WA and Washington DC, but for similar reasons that I went to Madison, WI; Fontana Dam, NC; Wolverhampton, UK; and Murfreesboro, TN. I am… Read more

Chowing Down in Cork City

When I met up with Jo in Dublin just before New Year’s Eve, I wasn’t sure if she would like the city and want to see other parts of Ireland. It was my third trip to the Emerald Isle and I knew all of the reasons I loved the country, but you never know how someone is going react. One of the things I like best about Ireland is the food, which surprises a lot of people. When I went for the first time in 2009, I was shocked myself at how many good meals I had. In retrospect it… Read more
