Running Two Marathons in 30 Days

I know your first question is not HOW did I run two marathons in 30 days but WHY did I run two marathons in 30 days. I understand your confusion, but chalk it up to my own Sicilian stubbornness. I was peer pressured to run the Charleston Marathon (January 17, 2014) by a friend. Athletic events are pretty much the only peer pressures I ever give into and she knew it was the perfect time to get me. I had been really bummed on November 3rd when it seemed like the world was running the NYC Marathon, but I… Read more

Carried Away in Mexico

“On a scale of 1 to beheaded, how unsafe to you feel right now?” I burst out laughing. This was day 3 of our 10Day, over the New Year, “Bad Idea” trip south of the border. We were walking back to our B&B from having an amazing meal in a converted monastery from the 1600s, and a kid on his trike just passed us on the street with a group of adults laughing in his wake. Yes, it was slightly insensitive joke. The idea that Mexico is unsafe is frankly quite laughable… if it wasn’t such a sad commentary on… Read more

The Real Scale

Muscle is more dense than fat. I’m going to say that again for myself and all my ladies: Muscle is more dense than fat. What that means is that if you put on muscle and lose fat, the numbers on the scale are going to go up. And up. And up. Thank you to Sophie and this article for saying it first and saying a number of other important things like “Think of all the potential that is thrown out the window when women deprive themselves of food on their quest to be thin.” My struggle, and the struggle of… Read more

Comfort Outside Your Comfort Zone

If you like cruise vacations, all inclusive resorts, action movies, food courts and strip malls, then you do not want to come to Leon’s BBQ in Galveston, TX. You do not want to join the troubadour parade in Merida, Mexico and you do not want to stay with Margaret in Doolin, Ireland. Of course you can take whatever vacation appeals to you (just seriously, take one), escape in whatever movie plotline you want to watch and eat whatever cheat meal you’d like. But here at Being Unbound we stress moving outside of comfort zones and expecting more from your surroundings…. Read more

Give and Take

OK Ladies, it is the perfect storm: Valentines Day meets a Friday. I am going to leave my rants on consumerism and the destruction of a good idea by commercialization for another day. Instead I will focus on the good. Choice is awesome like that. If you have a special someone, I hope you enjoy each other today. And tomorrow. And the day after that. If you don’t have a “someone” to shower with affection, I hope you shower yourself with it and maybe just pay it forward a little to a few random strangers. One thing you cannot over-indulge… Read more

“No” Permission

There was a moment around December 22nd where I said, “I really just don’t want to go out and drink anymore.” Maybe it is a sign of getting older. I dearly hope it isn’t some idea of “maturity.” I just really, really had enough. Enough food. Enough people. Enough — dare I say it — beer. The good times were great, don’t get me wrong, but I had my fill. There is so much pressure to enjoy while the enjoyment is there to be had. Go out because you’re in the city. Hit this party and hang with those people… Read more
