Local Brews

I wander into my NYC local and sidle up to the bar. I check the chalkboard for the specials as I do but know Jason will likely know better what I will like. I look down the line and see a few familiar faces and then one that surprises me. It is weird to see Dave on my own side of the bar. Usually my fave Irish bartender is adeptly pouring and telling tales up the street at a sister bar. With a smile, I walk over, squeeze into the space next to him and say hello. I am in… Read more

Very Quick Limerick

There once were two girls from New York, Who went to Limerick from Cork. They found coffee and beer, Friendly people and cheer, And some yummies to eat with a fork. Greyhound-like Tour After visiting the English Market in Cork we hopped the bus on to Limerick. We had purchased fresh bread and cheese at the market, and so enjoyed a little picnic as we used the free bus wifi to search for what to see and do at our next stop. We arrived under grey skies and were greeted with more of a city-feel than I think either of us was expecting…. Read more

Finding Fabulous Food in Dublin

As soon as I got off the bus in the Dublin center I felt comfortable. It was 5am. There were very few people about, yet those that were, were friendly. The street sweeper even offered up a “good morning” and a comment on the weather with a smile and charming lilt. I was tired from 24hours of travel – spending the night on the floors of the ferry station and boat – and Jen wasn’t do in for another hour or so but even so I was rather content as I searched for coffee and maybe some comfort food. I wandered… Read more

Intentionally Enjoying Beer

“Beer is proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy.”  – attributed to Ben Franklin but apparently mistakenly. In the supposed source for the quotation he is actually talking about wine (his drink of choice). Now, this is Internet research so who knows, maybe at some point he did say something similar about beer. If he didn’t say it, he should have. I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment. Let us not quarrel over history and merchandizing, let us instead appreciate our cups. Mostly confident Since launching Coffee, Books and Beer, I second-guessed my choice of “beer” many, many… Read more

Love Your Local

I love the idea of having a pub. My “local.” A casual, comfortable, decent-brew serving place where maybe even a few people, yes, know your name. The German tradition. The Irish tradition. Where people gather, drink (but not to too excess) and enjoy each other. Just so we are clear: I’m not a girl who just likes boys who like beer… I like beer. I like boys too but that it is a different blog post. I can tell countless stories of the Ex ordering a gin and tonic, me a stout, and 9 times out of 10 they would… Read more
